On 25th March 2023 at 8:30pm, O’right, Earth Hour Taiwan organizer, will join the “Biggest Hour for Earth” with the rest of the world for the iconic switch off moment. This year marks O’right’s 13th Earth Hour, calling on governments, businesses, celebrities, schools, communities and individuals across the world to switch off their lights and give an hour for earth, spending 60 minutes doing something positive for our planet. Japanese convenience store chain FamilyMart also joined this year to raise awareness on climate change. Decarbonization is not a corporate responsibility, but an action that all individuals should take to build capacity for collection impact.
From One Record-breaking Hour to Another
According to Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy, for every person that joins Earth Hour, 0.25 kg of CO2 can be reduced. In other words, if everyone in Taiwan, which has a population of 23 million, could take part in the event, 5.75 million kg of CO2 can be reduced, the amount of CO2 sequestered by 230 thousand trees. Small actions can have a big impact.
In 2022, Earth Hour Taiwan helped save 114,000 kWh of electricity according to the Taiwan Power Company, with over 460 businesses and 5,462 retailers across sectors playing a major role in shaping our future. Over the past 12 years, 588,670 kg of CO2 have been reduced, which is equal to planting 53,515 trees.
FamilyMart Joins the Biggest Hour for Earth for the First Time
O’right mobilized the 6 heads of cities of Taiwan, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taichung City, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, to take part in the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment as part of efforts to create the biggest hour for earth and inspire more Taiwanese people to act and take notice.
Taiwan’s 6 heads of cities support Earth Hour
This year, O’right joined forces with FamilyMart for the first time, with 4,100 stores across Taiwan scheduled to switch off for an hour on 25th March and deliver social value. Their contribution is estimated to save 6,495 kWh of electricity and 3,306 kg of CO2. Earth Hour is about promoting planet-saving practices, such as taking small steps to enforce environmentally-friendly habits in daily life.

Now in its 17th year, Earth Hour has shone a spotlight on the issues of climate change and nature loss, having reached over 190 countries and territories and millions of people around the globe. It has featured 18,000 of the world’s most iconic landmarks going dark. Earth Hour recognizes the role of individuals in creating solutions to the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to drive change.
On 25th March at 8:30pm local time, people can put down electronic devices, turn off the television or spend the hour with families to support and stand together in solidarity for both people and the planet. Switching off the lights is a symbolic gesture that serves as a powerful visual reminder of the power of collective action when individuals unite.
